"Blabbermouth" is the first half of the fourth episode in the twenty-fifth season of Arthur.

Summary

Buster learns how to keep a secret.

Plot

The Crosswires are returning from a trip to Hawaii, and Muffy's friends are throwing a surprise welcome home party for her at Arthur's house. Buster doesn't learn about the party until Arthur calls him right before Muffy's supposed to arrive, and Buster just barely makes it in time.

While the party is in full swing, Buster's annoyed that Arthur didn't tell him about it until the absolute last possible second and notes that this isn't the first time Arthur has done something like this (which causes Buster to note that they seem to have a lot of surprise parties). Arthur apologizes and admits that he and the others didn't tell Buster because they were all worried that he'd end up blabbing about the party to Muffy, thus ruining the surprise. Buster tries denying that he's a blabbermouth, but Arthur brings up various times that Buster has blabbed about stuff to others: Arthur's underwear nightmares, Arthur's crush on his babysitter, Arthur's fear of Grotesquely Grim Bunny, the time Arthur liked Love Ducks, and various other surprise parties that he and the others have held (which makes Arthur realize that Buster's right about them having a lot of surprise parties).

Buster claims that he can change; he asks Arthur to tell him a secret, so Arthur tells him that he was born in Transylvania. Unfortunately, Buster blabs this almost immediately while being served ice cream by Brain at the Ice Cream Shop. He admits this to Arthur and decides that if he only communicates by notepad, then he'll be able to think ahead and not tell secrets. Arthur tells him another "secret": D.W. had a brain transplant. Due to breaking his pencil and eventually running out of paper, Buster blabs this to George. He decides that he must not be friend material, but Arthur admits neither of the secrets he had told Buster were true: Arthur claims that, since he didn't trust Buster to keep an actual secret, he decided to make up some secrets for him to try and keep. Hearing this greatly upsets Buster, who says that while he may be incapable of keeping secrets, he at least didn't lie about something.

During the lunch period at school one day, Buster complains to Muffy about what Arthur did. He admits that, while he may be a blabbermouth, Arthur has blabbed about stuff too (like when Arthur had found out about how Buster still sucks his thumb). Muffy feels "privacy is overrated" and, after thinking about it, Buster decides that being a blabbermouth could potentially be a good thing. He and Muffy set up a booth and website where people can confess their secrets to Buster, and Muffy can upload them to her social media page. George, feeling bad for Buster, decides to tell him a secret― his first secret (claiming that he once slipped on a banana peel) doesn't go over too well, as Muffy claims that it's not a good enough secret, so George tells Buster what Muffy considers a juicier secret.

But Buster quickly starts feeling guilty for what he did and goes to Arthur for help, explaining the situation to him without revealing George's secret -- the two race over to Muffy's house on their bikes to keep her from posting George's secret on her blog. But this ultimately proves to be unnecessary, because upon arriving at the Crosswire Mansion, Muffy reveals to Arthur and Buster that, despite her earlier claims of privacy being overrated, ultimately decided against posting George's secret on her blog, feeling that it would've been "too mean." In fact, Muffy's decided to shut her site down altogether.

As they're heading home, Buster apologizes to Arthur about what happened earlier and the two conclude that best friends don't necessarily have to tell each other everything, just what's truly important. Buster then claims that he has a younger brother, which shocks Arthur, until Buster admits that he was just joking.

Trivia

  • These are the final series appearances for Rattles and Slink.
  • Rattles is seen having ice cream, but in previous episodes, he's revealed to be lactose intolerant (although it could have been some kind of non-dairy ice cream or at least a lactose-free ice cream).
  • This episode is one of the few episodes to have Buster crying.

Episode connections

  • The plot of this episode is similar to "The Secret About Secrets." The main differences being that while this episode focuses on Arthur's best friend, Buster, the previous episode focused on Arthur's sister, D.W.
  • Though George's secret is never revealed, it could be his admission to having a crush on Jenna Morgan. In "Jenna's Bedtime Blues," during Muffy's slumber party, Muffy has everyone tell their deepest, darkest secret, with the winner getting to sleep in a waterbed with her. Not wanting to be made fun of, Jenna chooses not to reveal her biggest secret (which is that she sometimes wets the bed), and decides to make up a secret instead: that she has a crush on George. Muffy chooses her as the winner. No one at the party says anything to George, but at the end of that episode, he gives her a flower. Since Muffy wanted George to spill a "juicy" secret, this is the most logical thing that Muffy would get excited over.
  • In recalling the various times Buster has blabbed about secrets, Arthur references the events of "Arthur's Underwear," "Crushed," "Tales of Grotesquely Grim Bunny" and "That's a Baby Show!"
    • This episode reveals that sometime after the events of "Crushed," Arthur confessed his crush on his babysitter to Buster, since Buster was oblivious to that in the actual episode.
  • Buster and Muffy talk about the events of "All Thumbs."
    • Despite Buster's claims of Arthur blabbing about Buster's secret thumb-sucking habit, that technically isn't true -- Arthur never blabbed about it to anyone, and the only reason that Francine found out was because she just happened to overhear Buster talking about it to Arthur.
  • Arthur fiddles with his glasses, a "tell" that he is being dishonest, or at least is hesitant to tell the truth. He first demonstrates this habit in "Arthur Meets Mister Rogers."
