"D.W.'s Blankie" is the first half of the twenty-seventh episode in the first season of Arthur. It was later adapted into the book D.W.'s Lost Blankie.

Summary

D.W. can't find her blankie and enlists the help of Arthur to search for it, retracing her steps over Elwood City.

Plot

Arthur is standing at a street corner. He tells the viewers about D.W.'s "smelly old blankie" that "never gets washed", and how she takes it with her everywhere she goes: to daycare (where once, she painted a picture of the blankie); on rides at the amusement park; and even when she takes a bath.) D.W. grabs Arthur's arm and pulls him down the street. Arthur explains that the blankie is the reason he's going all over town with D.W.

D.W.'s Blankie

D.W. is searching around the house for her blankie. She asks Arthur to help her. At first, Arthur refuses, because he wants to go to Buster's condo and watch the Renegade Joe movies that Buster rented. He tells D.W. she should get Jane to help her, but D.W. says that their mom is at work for the day. D.W. accuses Pal of taking her blankie, but Arthur tells her that Pal wouldn't have done that. Arthur again refuses to help D.W., saying that he plans to go to Buster's, but when D.W. says that she will reveal to Arthur's friends that he still sleeps with his teddy bear Stanley, Arthur agrees to help her.

Arthur asks D.W. where she last remembered having her blankie. D.W. recalls that Jane had to give some papers to Mrs. Tibble, and she thinks the Tibble Twins stole her blankie as she and Jane were leaving the Tibbles' house. Arthur questions how they would have done that unnoticed by D.W. or Jane. D.W. theorizes that Mrs. Tibble threw "magic dust" on her and her mom, putting them into a trance and allowing the twins to steal the blankie. D.W. is desperate to save her blankie from the Tibbles.

At the Tibbles' house, Mrs. Tibble says that the twins are with Trixie. She thinks Arthur was inquiring about them because he wants to play with them, and promises she'll make plans for them to see Arthur when they return. She closes the door before Arthur can explain.

D.W. then believes that her blankie got lost at the dry cleaner's. She thinks she got hypnotized by the spinning clothes rack, which ordered D.W. to give her the blankie, and she complied, handing it to a mechanical arm that emerged from the machine.

When D.W. and Arthur go to the dry cleaner's, the worker there thinks D.W.'s story is funny, and also thinks that D.W. is cute.

After leaving the dry cleaners, D.W. thinks that she may have lost her blankie at the library because it got caught in one of the books that D.W. and her mom were returning, and that D.W. didn't notice because she was waving goodbye to Ms. Turner, the librarian.

When Arthur and D.W. go to the library, Ms. Turner checks all the books and doesn't find D.W.'s blankie, but tells D.W. to check the card catalogs to find books about blankies. Also at the library, Arthur spots Binky reading books, and doesn't want him to know that he's looking for D.W.'s blankie. When Binky sees Arthur, he does not want him to find out that he is reading. On the way out Arthur and Binky manage to avoid each other by not looking at each other.

D.W. then tells Arthur that she must have lost her blankie at the car wash, because while she and Jane were going through, D.W. got scared by the giant dry cleaning vacuum coming down. She thinks that while she had her eyes closed, the vacuum sucked her blankie out the car window.

When Arthur and D.W. go to the car wash, one of the workers says that the vacuum only sucks up water, not blankies. But he offers D.W. his polishing cloth, which she turns down.

Finally, D.W. takes Arthur to the last place that she and Jane went: The Sugar Bowl. She believes that she left her blankie there after finishing her ice cream. Arthur looks in the window and sees Francine, Muffy, Prunella, and Sue Ellen.

He does not want them to know he is looking for D.W.'s blankie, but goes in without a choice. When Francine sees Arthur, she asks him to sit with her and the other girls, but Arthur says no because he's "just getting D.W. some ice cream".

He looks over, and D.W. is on the floor, looking for her blankie. Muffy asks what D.W. is doing, and Arthur says that she is just playing "some make-believe game". D.W. comes over and says they don't have what she was looking for. Francine asks what D.W. was wanting, and Arthur tells the girls that she was talking about her favorite flavor of ice cream. He tries to quickly leave with D.W., but Francine asks what D.W.'s favorite flavor is. On the spot, Arthur comes up with "Chocolate-Vanilla Chip...Blankie".

After Arthur and D.W. leave the Sugar Bowl, D.W. complains that she still hasn't found her blankie, but Arthur is adamant that now, he is going to Buster's. Unfortunately for Arthur, Buster tells him that his mom returned the Renegade Joe movies to the movie rental store. As Buster goes on and on about how wonderful all the movies were, Arthur gives D.W. an angry look for making him miss the movies.

That night, when David tucks D.W. into bed, she asks him about her blankie. He promises that they'll look for it in the morning and that she should go to sleep now. When D.W. falls asleep, she has a dream about her blankie.

Arthur hears her and rushes in to wake her up from the dream. When D.W. tells Arthur that she can't sleep without her blankie, Arthur offers her Stanley, but she does not accept it. Pal appears with a blanket, which D.W. rejects; she wants her blankie. Arthur tells D.W. that it is her blankie, and D.W. realizes that he is right; she hadn't recognized her blankie because it was clean due to Jane having washed it. D.W. hugs her blankie warmly, then apologizes to Pal for blaming him.

Arthur takes Pal and goes to his room to go to bed. When he tries to fall asleep, he notices that Stanley isn't there. D.W. appears with Stanley, which Arthur had left in her room, and she says to Arthur "I'm sure you don't need him."

Arthur gets angry and chases D.W., trying to get Stanley.
