"Never, Never, Never" is the second half of the first episode in the twelfth season of Arthur.

Summary[]

D.W. has too many toys, so she has to give some to charity. She instead plans to give them to someone who really loves her, but Emily does not play along, and the Tibbles end up with the toys.

Plot[]

After D.W. presents a play about love, Grandma Thora comes with a new toy for her. D.W. is about to put it in the closet, when all her other toys fall on her. Mrs. Read plans to make D.W. give some of her toys away. D.W. gets rattled thinking that her mom does not love her, and says that she will give all of her toys to someone who really loves her, to show to her mom. At the play school, D.W. announces that she is donating all of her toys, and also that, before they get them, they have to say how much they love her.

The Tibble Twins then start to kiss up to D.W., but Emily is ashamed of how silly D.W. is acting, and refuses to take part. The Tibble Twins get all of D.W.'s toys, but when she sees they are playing rough with them, Emily catches D.W. crying over by the play structure and asks her what happened. D.W. says harshly to Emily "Like you care!", hurting Emily's feelings, and D.W. storms off without taking back what she said to Emily. She then goes to Arthur for help, who refuses. D.W. tries to get back the toys that are not broken, but the Tibbles take them away. D.W. stands out alone in the rain until she sees Arthur come to get her and she tearfully tells him that the Tibbles are destroying all of her toys. Arthur gives D.W. his umbrella and goes inside the Tibbles' house to get her toys back, and does so, but his glasses are damaged in the process. D.W. then learns that love is not something you buy or say, but the things your friends and family are willing to do. She holds a yard sale to earn some money for Arthur's new glasses and sees Emily. D.W. apologizes to Emily for being rude and for what she said to her the week prior, and promises to never do something like that again.

Trivia[]

  • Mr. Ratburn is seen riding his bicycle towards the end of the episode too.
  • Moral: Love is not about what somebody says or buys, but it's something your family and friends are willing to do for you.

Episode connections[]

  • D.W.'s half birthday is mentioned in this episode. This means that this episode occurs in September, because her birthday is March 1. D.W.'s half birthday party is celebrated later during this season in "Do You Believe in Magic?."
  • In "D.W. Flips," the Tibbles asked if they could have D.W.'s toys if she did not make it across the balance beam.
  • The Tibbles wreck D.W.'s toys when she gives them to him. Arthur previously imagined them destroying Stanley after Vicita gave him to them in "Desperately Seeking Stanley", only to find that Mrs. Tibble repaired him.

Cultural references[]

  • Many of the elements in this episode are borrowed from William Shakespeare's King Lear: Lear and D.W. choose untrustworthy inheritors over reliable ones; Emily and Lear's daughter Cordelia refuse to play along with games to prove their love; both Lear and D.W. rage angrily against storms; and the declaration "never, never, never, never, never" features prominently in both stories.
