Bubby was the fun and energetic maternal grandmother of Francine and Catherine, the mother of Laverne and the mother-in-law of Oliver.

She first appears briefly in "Arthur's Perfect Christmas" but is identified by name in "Is That Kosher?" when she visits Francine's family's apartment to celebrate Yom Kippur.

In "The Great MacGrady," it was revealed that her husband died of cancer, and her own passing is revealed in "Listen Up."[1]

She was one of two guest stars who returned with speaking roles, with Lance Armstrong being the only other guest star.

Relationships

Family

  • Laverne Frensky - Laverne and Bubby had a good relationship, as they were mother and daughter. Bubby at times picked on her daughter (along with her son-in-law), saying that she hardly feeds Francine and Catherine, as well as when she said that their apartment isn't clean.
  • Francine Frensky - Francine and Bubby got along well too, and Francine seems to be the person who had the most interaction with Bubby. The two did many things together. Francine was incredibly devastated after her passing.
  • Oliver Frensky - Not much interaction was seen between Oliver and Bubby, but she loved him a lot.
  • Catherine Frensky - When Bubby arrived for Yom Kippur, she energetically embraced both Francine and Catherine and called then her "favorite grandchildren". She then told Catherine that, although she was turning into "such a beauty" that, "...blue really isn't your color, darling..."

"Bubbe" used in Francine's Tough Day

"Bubbe" is a word originating from Yiddish which means "grandmother." Since there is more than one way to spell the word in English, official PBS sources have variously used Bubby[2][3] Bubbe,[4][5][6] and Bubba.[7][8] On this wiki, "Bubby" is preferred because it is the spelling used in actual dialogue in "Is That Kosher?"[9] In "Francine's Tough Day," Francine refers to Bubby as "my bubbe."

Trivia

  • Excluding non-anthropomorphic animals like Spanky or Bucky, or mentioned deceased characters, she is the only character to die during the course of the series.
  • Although it was never revealed where she lived, it's possible that Bubby was living in Florida at the time of her death since Muffy mentioned that Francine and her family went there for her funeral.
  • It's unknown what her real name was.
