"Hic or Treat" is the first half of the seventh episode in the eleventh season of Arthur.

Summary

As Arthur tries to prepare his costume for Halloween, he finds himself distracted by D.W.'s persistent case of hiccups.

Plot

The episode starts out with Arthur digging out everything from his closet D.W. walks in and asked him what's he doing {Hic} besides messing up your room. Arthur stops and tells her "None of your business." Then Arthur takes D.W. out and then shuts his door and tells her she's driving him insane with her hic-upping then he goes backs into his closet then takes out a green suit jacket and slips it on then tells us "Do you know how some kids dress up as kitty cats and fairies on Halloween? well that's not what Halloween's about I'll show you what I mean." Then he imagines and then we see three kids in Halloween costumes one in a princess costume one in a light purple dog costume with purple dots and D.W.'s preschool friend is in a pumpkin costume, One of them rings the doorbell and a woman answers it and then all 3 of them in unison say "Trick Or Treat!!" then the woman says "oh look you're so cute." then she gets the bowl of candy until Arthur says "Wrong." Then he comes from the right and tells the 3 kids "On Halloween You need to look like monsters and scare people." Then he says "try again." to them and then shuts the door. Then the door bell rings again and this time Arthur answers it, Then 3 kids are scary all right. One is a olive green monster, one of them is a ghost, and the other one is a vampire, Then when Arthur sees them, He says "there you go, much better." Then he takes the bag of candy and dumps it into the person that's a ghost's bag. Then as soon as the imagine is over, We see Arthur now putting on a pair of black boots and a surgeon mask and then says "Scaring people is important and it's fun." then he opens his door to scare D.W. with a Frankenstein laugh, but D.W. was not scared at all she just laughs. Then she asks if that was his scary idea and is that underpants on his mouth. Then Arthur is annoyed then screen fades black and shows title card,

Then we see Arthur, Brain, Buster and Francine in the tree house, Then Arthur tells them he's going to be Frankentist, Frankenstein and Dentist mixed. Francine says she is going to be a prom queen. Buster says "He's going to be Candy Boy and tells everyone about him. Brain says he's going for a 14th Century. Then at nighttime Arthur tells D.W. in the hall that he's going to wear a scary costume this year. Then D.W. says she's going to be way scarier than him. Then Arthur asks her What possibly be more scarier than Frankentist. Then she says "Hairless Mouse, A dog that walks on it's hind legs. skates without shoelaces, and or even a brown banana. Then after she says that's scary, she hic-ups after, Then Arthur asks his mom if she could make D.W. stop hic-upping and has been doing it yesterday. Then Jane asks D.W. if she tried holding her breath. Then she tries it but Arthur tells her to cut it out. Then she spits out a bite of her sandwich she was chewing that Jane gave her all over Arthur, Then the saliva sandwich particles go to a new scene where Francine is asking her if a crown is scarier or a tiara is scarier, Then she asks Arthur why he is covered with crumbs on his shoulder, Then Arthur brushes it off and tells her and Brain it was all D.W.'s fault and she's been hic-upping for 2 days straight and it's driving him nuts. Then Francine and Brain tells Arthur to suggest getting rid of hic-ups,

Now we see D.W. watching Mary Moo Cow, Arthur sneaks up beside D.W. and scare her but it failed because he trips on blue, green and yellow pencils, lands on the couch and falls over. Then at dinnertime David D.W. and Arthur's father asks D.W. if there's a way to stop, D.W. says No and Jane tells David she tried holding her breath and drinking water and doesn't know what else to do. Then Arthur tells Jane that Brain told him to scare her but it failed and made her hic-ups much worse. Because there's no way you can scare me D.W. says. Next scene D.W. hands a list to Arthur and tells him they are things scare her if he wants to scare her, Then Arthur reads number 1 and it says Doob...bny? Then D.W. tells him it's dark bunny, But she says she heard it's scary but never watched it. When Arthur reads list number two, he says Oc-ps-ss? Then D.W. tells him it's Octopuses, then she says if one fell in her bath she won't know what to do. Then Arthur reads the third thing on the list and he says it looks like a cookie then D.W. tells Arthur gingerbread men are scary with little raisin eyes and fat legs, then when Arthur reads the fourth and final thing on her list you'll never believe it it's Uni D.W.'s favorite unicorn. but D.W. says that losing Uni is scary, but then she gasps and says no, It was having to give Uni to the Tibbles. Then Arthur asks her why can't she be scared of normal stuff like aliens and cobwebs then D.W. shrugs and starts by doing number 2, Then now we see D.W. in the bathtub then D.W. calls Arthur and tells him she's ready to be scared then Arthur tells her it's not if you know an octopus is coming and she has to be surprised. Then D.W. pretends to play in the bathtub and chill and Arthur holds out a red and blue striped ball with safety green colored pipe cleaners and yells it's an octopus then D.W. yells and finds out that it's not an octopus and that it's a red and blue striped ball with safety green colored pipe cleaners. Then Arthur he didn't have an actual- but he stops he tries doing number 1. Then he throws away the a red and blue striped ball with safety green colored pipe cleaners and then D.W. says she's ready to get the show done with, Then Arthur shuts the light and asks her if she want's her blanket, then D.W. says her blanket bit the dust a long time ago. Arthur turns on the T.V. and then he see's the episode is a crossover with Mary Moo Cow then Arthur looks in his magazine and reads "Friday on dark bunny, Mary Moo Cow pays the bad bunny a visit." Then when Arthur sees dark bunny and Mary Moo Cow sing together he orders D.W. to turn it off. Now D.W. and Arthur are in the Sugar Bowl and there we see a cute gingerbread man on a plate. Then D.W. asks Arthur if he's sure the gingerbread won't be mad if she ate it. Then Arthur tells her to trust him and that's she's a 1,000% sure. Then D.W. does it. Then she eats off it's head, and then jumps down from the chair and tells Arthur that's it's alive and it's moving inside her, Then Arthur tells her it's just a cookie. Then D.W. says it's coming back up but no she just burped and also hic-upped. Then Arthur sighs and then does the final step. Then Arthur tells her it better work, Then they ring the tibbles doorbell and both Timmy and Tommy answer it and they both have devil horns on with Timmy in a blue cape that matches his kerchief, and Tommy in a red cape that matches his kerchief. Then D.W. hands them Uni and her clothes and pleads quickly she wants her back after her hic-ups are over. Then Arthur and D.W. run from the house and then D.W, puts her head under the rail and then Arthur tells that it didn't seem too scary and then D.W. tells him it was terrifying. And asks will she ever see her again. Then D.W. doesn't hic up, Then she and Arthur jump up and down and cheer. Then Brain bumps into them and says Hi to them, Then D.W. says her hic-ups are gone then Brain says he was reading about the world record holder for hic-ups. Then he tells them that a guy named Charles Osborne had hic-ups for 68 years. Then as soon as Brain leaves D.W.'s hic-ups return and says oh no. Then she imagines her setting up the world record for hic-ups then we see her with white hair not brown. Then D.W. walks in front of the mic and hic-ups for the audience and they cheer, then the announcer asks her how it feels to be this close to history, D.W. says "Terrible." then he tells her if she can still hic-up for 30 seconds then she would officially be old for 64 years, Then when D.W. tries, she then tells the announcer that she can't hic-up any longer, Now you decide to stop he asks her. Then he tells the audience it was a bust and tells them to go home. Then at the end of the imagination she shakes her head and then it goes back then she tells Arthur she at least won't be needing a Halloween costume this year and just go as Hic-up Girl then Arthur tells D.W. he has to admit that it is scary. Then next we see David as a sandwich, Jane as a witch and Baby Kate as a bumblebee, Then when Jane looks at D.W. she asks her why isn't she wearing a costume, Then D.W. tells Jane that she is wearing a costume and that she's a hic-up girl. Then Jane walks over to her and then tells her that her hic-ups won't last forever. Then D.W. says "No just for 64 years, Then when we go to Arthur's room we see Brain, Buster, Francine and Arthur in their costume and Arthur says his Frankentist costume is not scary at all but it looks weird. Then Francine tells him it's not like it's a competition or anything like that. Because if it was then you're last. Then Arthur takes off his glasses and then puts them in his pocket. Then Buster says "Candy boy needs some candy." Then Francine asks him if he could see out of his mask then he tells her he sure can, Then he accidentally bumps Brain and Brain says "OW! Watch it." "Sorry Brain." Buster tells him. Then they head downstairs but then Arthur walks lastly behind, Then downstairs Jane comes in and says "Wonderful costumes everybody." Then her broom gets caught on the lamp cord and accidentally unplugs it causing the lights to turn off. Buster asked what happened to the lights and then Jane tells him "My broom unplugged the lamb." Then she finds a flashlight in handy and turns it on, Then Arthur walks down the stairs holding a dentist tool in his hand scaring D.W. then she yells for help, Then Arthur tells her it's him, Then after Jane plugs back in the lamp, Arthur puts his glasses back on, Then D.W. tells him it was a disgusting costume and he scared her and will never talk to him again, Then D.W. finally know her hic-ups are gone and tells him you did it Arthur, Then Arthur asks her "I did scare you?" then the doorbell rings and David opens the door and it's 3 kids dressed up as monsters, The same ones in the beginning of the episode where Arthur was talking about halloween. Then David tells them their costumes are great then he goes and gets the bowl of candy, Then Arthur in his costume says ROAR to try to scare them but they did not scream they just laugh at him. Then Arthur pulls off his surgeon mask and says "I knew it was too good to be true." then in a snap he hicked up. Then he covers his mouth and looked at us. Then the screen fades to black.

Halloween also takes place in the one-hour special "Arthur and the Haunted Tree House". As such, Arthur, Buster, Francine, and Mr. and Mrs. Read all have the same costumes.

Errors

When discussing D.W.'s fears, she says she has never seen Dark Bunny, but heard it's "scary." However, in "That's a Baby Show!" she says she watched it the day before and it scared her.

Production notes

In the title card, D.W.'s dress is colored orange and Arthur's pants are colored green. This is because the episode takes place on Halloween and orange and green are colors commonly related to the holiday.

Then David tells them their costumes are great then he goes and gets the bowl of candy, Then Arthur in his costume says ROAR to try to scare them but they did not scream they just laugh at him. Then Arthur pulls off his surgeon mask and says "I knew it was too good to be true." then in a snap he hicked up. Then he covers his mouth and looked at us. Then the screen fades to black.
