Irina Katrina Von Hapsonburg, Archduchess of Moldavia[1] was the original owner of a necklace that Muffy inherited from her great-grandmother, Taffy Crosswire.[2]

According to Muffy, Taffy met the Archduchess while returning from Europe on a steamship. The Archduchess claimed to be in need of money so Taffy requested to purchase her necklace.[2]

However, the expert on Treasure Caravan discovered that the necklace was just costume jewelry, and told Muffy that she had never heard of an Archduchess of Moldavia with that name. She believes Irina was an impostor, possibly even a man in disguise.[2] A flashback suggests that she was right.

Behind the scenes[]

"Hapsonburg" is a likely reference to Hapsburg, the name of a royal house whose members occupied various European thrones from 1282 to 1918. The fact that it is not the correct name hints at Irina's status as a fake.

In the real world Moldavia was ruled by a prince, not an archduke, thus there was never an archduchess. However, the historian in the Arthur episode states that "Irina Katrina Von Hapsonburg" was the unfamiliar part of the name, which seems to indicate that there were genuine Archduchesses of Moldavia in the Arthur world.
