Mr. Clarkson was the strict and demanding butler of Fountain Abbey. As butler in the service of Lord Binkford Bantam, he was the superior of all other servants and trained Mary Alice. While he noticed Mary Alice's lack of talent, he did not allow Miss O’Breean to gossip about her.
