Shelley Barnes was Binky's great-grandfather. As a 9-year-old[1] boy, he worked as a trapeze artist with The Traveling Malenky Brothers, an unsuccessful circus group. During a midnight walk he discovered that he was remarkably strong. He became the circus' strongman and main attraction. He also made suggestions to improve the other acts. Eventually he took over the circus and toured with it for many years.
Shelley "Binky" Barnes is named after him. He found the name embarrassing until he learned his namesake's history.
Another ancestor of Binky who loved the circus was Lord Binkford Bantam. However, since the Bantam family got rich by selling their castle Fountain Abbey, it is unlikely that Shelley Barnes was a direct descendant of him.
